Skycable goes prepaid

Surfing The Sky
As the clock struck midnight officially ringing in 2008, aside from the fireworks and the hoopla surrounding the New Year, something happened to cable connections all across Metro Manila. Sky Cable officially implemented the changes they have been planning; and some channels have officially made the big move to free television.
I’m sure most of you are still getting used to the new line-up; so I called upon my couch potato powers and channel surfed my way around Sky Cable in order to guide you and help you out. It’s a thankless job; but somebody’s got to do it.
Casualties, Merging and Moving
The very obvious casualties are Jack TV, Solar Sports and Basketball TV. This means that we lost a lot of comedy programs (MADtv, Just for Laughs) and game shows (Distraction, Beat the Geeks). We will also miss premieres of shows such as The Big Bang Theory and Aliens in America. Most especially, we will not be able to watch Solar Sports’ extensive coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics this August.
A couple of shows from ETC have also moved to Jack TV, which means that The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Saturday Night Live are now nowhere to be found.

However, all is not lost; because three cable channels that were almost pulled out from Sky Cable’s line-up have moved to free television, namely ETC, 2nd Avenue and Crime/Suspense (C/S). ETC is now on SBN 21 (channel 16). 2nd Avenue is now on RJTV 29 (channel 19). C/S is now on RPN 9 (channel 14). This means that our old favorites from each of these channels such as Heroes, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Friday Night Lights, Prison Break and a whole lot more are here to stay. In addition to that, Late Show with David Letterman now has ETC as its new home. As an added bonus, these three channels are where a bunch of the newest shows will premiere this year. Watch out for series such as Chuck, Pushing Daisies, Gossip Girl and Mad Men, among others.
Sports fans can also rest easy; because Solar Entertainment Corporation (of Basketball TV and Solar Sports) has inked deals with ABC 5 (channel 10) to air the NBA conference finals as well as popular wrestling shows WWE Smackdown and WWE Raw.
Some old channels, on the other hand, have moved homes. Lifestyle Network is now on channel 52; and Disney Channel is now on channel 47.
Six New Channels

Sky Cable now boasts of six new channels this 2008: Balls, Velvet, Maxxx, Fox Crime, AXN Beyond and KidsCo. Let’s lay it all out, shall we?
Balls (channel 34) is a sports channel that has mainly shown tennis matches over the past couple of weeks. From time to time, they also air non-mainstream sports such as cheerleading, surfing and car rallies. Expect some NCAA Basketball and football leagues in the mix very soon.

Velvet (channel 53) is a channel skewed towards the female demographic. Some of the shows that are uniquely theirs are The View and Good Morning America. They also have Dirt, Huff and the hilarious E! program The Soup. This channel also has reruns of old programs such Charmed and Crossing Jordan. Velvet has a mix of drama, comedy, reality television, entertainment shows and movies for programming women would stay at home for.
Maxxx (channel 51), on the other hand, is targeted towards the male demographic. Expect a lot of bikini-clad women, car shows and reality series that scream “masculine.” They offer reality shows such as Bullrun and American Inventor. I mostly stay away from the programs here; because obviously they’re not for me. However, Attack of the Show is something worth checking out if like me, you love gadgets, games, movies and anything about pop culture.

FoxCrime (channel 50) is very similar to Crime/Suspense. However, two critically-acclaimed shows are found exclusively on this channel; and you should not miss them. I’m referring to Dexter and Brotherhood.
AXN Beyond (channel 35), is obviously an extension of AXN. This channel offers some of the programs AXN already has and more. AXN Beyond focuses more on science fiction and fantasy so expect programs such as Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X Files, The Dresden Files, Painkiller Jane and a whole lot more.
KidsCo (channel 38) needs no introduction or explanation. This channel will offer shows such as Archie’s Weird Mysteries, Dennis the Menace, Madeline, Ned’s Newt and Inspector Gadget.
And there you have it… some idea of what’s new and what has changed in Sky Cable this 2008. Whether you’re happy about it or not, these are changes that have been in place since the year started. Personally, I’m sticking with Sky Cable; because thanks to the changes on free TV, I don’t have to let go of the many shows I already watch. Plus, these new channels promise to add a lot more choices to my viewing repertoire.
With this simple guide, I hope you won’t be lost from now on; and despite the loss of channels we loved, we can still look forward to a lot of good TV on cable and on free TV this year. Happy channel surfing!
